Stockpiling is the concept of buying items your family needs and uses when they are on sale and in quantities you can reasonably store and use before expiration. When starting a stockpile, you’ll also begin to take into account store sales cycles to maximize savings.
If I had a quarter for every time I heard the phrase “But our family doesn’t eat (fill in the blank)!” - I’d be a very wealthy Couponista! Every family’s stockpile looks different, but the principles remain the same! You shop for sale items and buy using coupons (hopefully double coupons) where possible! You also want to start buying in quantities to get your family through more than just that week’s worth of meals. These quantities can be actual calculations based on your families intake. You also must take into account your family’s storage space and expiration dates. If don’t have room for it, you’ll need to adjust your quantities.
Here’s a basic list to keep as a simple guideline:
2 Week Stock
Perishables such as:
- Dairy: Milk, Yogurt, Sour Cream
- Eggs
- Bread, Rolls, bagels, etc
- Fresh Fruits & Veggies
1-2 Month Stock
Perishables that can be frozen such as:
- Meat
- Cheeses
- Fruit: Berries, cherries, etc
- Vegetables: Peppers, Green beans, Peas, Corn
6 Month Stock
Non-Perishables such as:
- Canned Goods: Vegetables, Fruits, Soups, Broth, beans, Pasta Sauce
- Packaged Foods: Applesauce, Crackers, Oatmeal, Granola Bars, Peanut Butter
- Baking Needs: Flour, Sugar, Chocolate Chips, Oil, Evaporated Milk, Cake Mix, Nuts
- Prepared Goods: Rice, Ketchup, Mustard, BBQ Sauce, Mayonnaise, Salad Dressing
- Drinks: Bottle Juice, Drink Mixes, Hot Cocoa, Tea
1-2 Years Stock
Non-Perishables such as:
- Laundry Detergent, Cleaning Supplies, Soap
- Dental Products: Toothpaste, Floss, Mouthwash, Toothbrushes
- Personal Care: Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Hairspray, Hair Gel, Makeup, Razors, Shaving Cream
- Feminine Hygiene: Tampons, Pads
- Home Goods: Air Fresheners, Candles, Batteries
- Paper Products: Toilet Paper, Paper Towel, Ziploc bags, Plastic Wrap, Wax Paper, Aluminum Foil, Office Supplies
